Arsenal 0-0 Sunderland: Black Cats survive as Gunners tighten grip on third
Only Important Events
My name is Ben Cullimore and it's been an absolute pleasure describing all of the action to you this evening. Until next time, goodbye!
As a result, Sunderland move up to 15th place in the table and are safe from relegation, meaning that the fight to avoid the drop is now between both Hull City and Newcastle United going into the final game of the season. Meanwhile, Arsenal stay in third and, with four points separating themselves and Manchester City, cannot finish in second place.
It was all Arsenal from start to finish as they put the Black Cats under an incredible amount of pressure all evening long, but the visitors put in one of the most impressive defensive displays of the season, sitting deep and defending resolutely to keep the determined hosts at bay time and time again.
Sunderland have held on to pick up what is surely their most important and impressive result of the season, one that confirms their place in the Premier League for another campaign!
FULL-TIME: ARSENAL 0-0 SUNDERLAND
90 + 3'
Arsenal push forward on what is sure to be their last attacking move of the game, with Sanchez and Walcott trying to link up on the right-hand side of the penalty area, but the Chilean's pass is poor and can only find Van Aanholt, who then thumps the ball up the pitch and away from danger.
90 + 1'
Rosicky flicks the ball into the path of Giroud, who then clumsily clips Larsson from behind, resulting in a free kick for Sunderland just outside of their own penalty area. Unsurprisingly, Pantilimon takes his time with the set-piece, much to the annoyance of the home fans.
90'
The fourth official has indicated that there will be three minutes of added time.
89'
No matter how hard they try, Arsenal just can't find the back of the net! They are throwing everything they have at Sunderland, but the visitors are doing brilliantly well to keep them at bay.
87'
Another great save by Pantilimon! Walcott, who has been excellent since coming on, breaks into the penalty area before forcing the Romanian goalkeeper into a wonderful diving stop. Again, he's only able to push it into the path of Ramsey, but it takes the Welshman by surprise and he ends up missing the ball with his off-balance volleyed effort.
86'
Fletcher finds Buckley with an excellent cross-field pass, and he then cuts the ball back to Defoe, who is just outside of the Arsenal penalty area. The striker then finds Rodwell with a quick cross, but the former Manchester City midfielder is slightly offside, and the linesman's flag is raised as a result.
84'
Another excellent opportunity for Arsenal! Pantilimon is forced into making another great diving save by a strong strike by Walcott, but he ends up spilling it into the path of Giroud. The Frenchman is just about to pull the trigger before Coates and Larsson link up to clear the danger at the vital moment.

79'
After a few moments on the sideline, it looks as if Larsson is going to be able to continue for the final 10 minutes of the game.
77'
Larsson is down on the floor and in serious discomfort, and it doesn't look good for Sunderland, who have just made their last substitution.
75'

Will Buckley

Adam Johnson

Sunderland have made their final change of the game, with Buckley coming on to take the place of Johnson.

74'
Almost an own goal by Jones! A bouncing Ramsey cross slips off the foot of Coates before striking the body of the left-back and flying into the woodwork. What a heartbreaking moment that would have been for Sunderland!
73'
Excellent opportunity for Walcott! The substitute darts through the Sunderland defence and into the right-hand side of the penalty area before chipping a lovely shot over the outstretched arms of Pantilimon and towards goal, but Coates is there to, once again, clear the danger.
71'
Arsenal are bossing possession in the Sunderland half of the pitch, but, as has been the case for the vast majority of the game thus far, they are finding it incredibly difficult to find a way through the sea of blue shirts camped in front of them.
69'
What a chance for Fletcher! Van Aanholt bursts forward down the left wing before firing a fierce low cross towards the edge of the six-yard box where it meets the aforementioned striker, but he somehow ends up sending his toe-poked shot over just over the top of the crossbar from close range.
67'

Theo Walcott

Jack Wilshere

Arsenal have made their first substitution of the evening, with Wilshere making way for Walcott, who comes on to make his 300th Gunners appearance.

66'
A deep cross from Ozil is only half cleared by Van Aanholt at the far post, but Sanchez is unable to find the back of the net with his follow-up header and it ends up flying a few yards over the top of the goal.
65'
Ramsey and Giroud try to link up on the edge of the Sunderland penalty area, but the Frenchman's first touch is poor, forcing Cazorla into knocking the ball out of play for a throw-in midway inside the visitors' half of the pitch.
63'
Arsenal are piling the pressure on Sunderland at the moment, and once again Gibbs goes close, this time with a curling shot from the edge of the penalty area that is deflected over the top of the crossbar and out of play for a corner.
61'
The resulting set-piece is flung to the back post, where it finds Coates, but the defender's header ends up sailing well wide of the goal.
60'
It's end to end stuff! First, Sanchez sees a great low shot blocked at the vital moment by a Coates sliding interception, before Graham breaks away on a quick counter attack and almost beats Ospina with a deft chipped shot that the Colombian goalkeeper is just about able to tip round the near post.
58'
Another great save by Pantilimon! This time it's Gibbs who tests the goalkeeper with a strong header at the back post, but the Sunderland shot-stopper is there to once again to deny Arsenal the opportunity to make it 1-0.
57'
And then Ramsey goes close! Arsenal keep hold of the ball and work it over to the Welshman, who immediately curls a low shot from 25 yards out ends up flying just past the far post.
56'
What a save by Pantilimon! Sanchez finds Bellerin with an excellent cross-field pass, and the young defender then immediately curls a great cross into the box. It finds Giroud, who flicks the ball towards goal from the near post but sees his strike denied by the Romanian goalkeeper, who pulls off a wonderful diving stop.
54'
Sunderland push forward on another counter attack after breaking down Arsenal's front line, but Van Aanholt brings the move to a disappointing end with a poor pass that fails to beat Cazorla, denying Defoe the opportunity to go one-on-one with Ospina.
53'
Giroud muscles his way past two Sunderland defenders near the byline before chipping a deft cross towards the back post, but it's slightly mishit and ricochets off the top of the crossbar and out of play for a goal kick.

And now Van Aanholt goes close! Defoe threads a fantastic pass through the middle of Koscielny and Bellerin and into the path of the left-back, but he ends up sending his low shot into the feet of Ospina.
50'

49'
Nervy moments at the back for Arsenal! Sunderland break away on a quick counter attack, with Fletcher then trying to dink the ball into the path of Defoe, but Koscielny seems to move his arm in the way of the pass to deny it from doing so. The visitors cry for a free kick but the referee shakes his head and waves play on.
47'
Sanchez sends a great through-ball into the path of Ramsey, who is quickly dispossessed by a wonderful sliding tackle from Rodwell. The resulting set-piece then bounces into the chest of Wilshere, but he's unable to get a shot away before being knocked off the ball by Fletcher.

Steven Fletcher

Danny Graham

Sunderland have decided to make two substitutions during the half-time break. The first player to come on is Rodwell, who takes the place of Wickham.

Jack Rodwell

Connor Wickham

And the second is Fletcher, who replaces Graham.

46'
And we're underway once again!
The two teams are making their way back out onto the pitch ahead of the start of the second half.
It's been a frustrating opening period for Arsenal, who have absolutely bossed possession in the Sunderland half of the pitch but still have nothing to show for it. The visitors have sat incredibly deep and defended extremely well to keep the determined hosts at bay, and, as a result, they are just 45 minutes away from confirming their Premier League safety.
HALF-TIME: ARSENAL 0-0 SUNDERLAND
45 + 2'
Arsenal push forward on one of their last attacks of the half, with Sanchez doing well to break into the Sunderland penalty area before looking to shoot, but he's dispossessed by an excellent tackle from Wickham.
45'
The fourth official has indicated that there will be two minutes of added time.
44'
Arsenal's intensity has decreased somewhat, and they have dropped slightly deeper as they seem resigned to the fact that they will enter the half-time break with the scores still level at 0-0, despite their dominance in the Sunderland half of the pitch.
42'
An Arsenal attacking move breaks down, allowing Sunderland to break away on a quick counter attack through Defoe. He slows down slightly before working the ball over to Johnson, who then fires a 25-yard strike several yards over the top of the crossbar.
40'
Sanchez and Ozil link up on the left flank before the German tries to send a low cross in towards Giroud, but Jones is there to cut out the danger with yet another vital interception.
38'
Once again, Arsenal are forced into shooting from distance as a result of strong defending from the visitors, and this time it's Ozil who blasts his long-range effort well over the top of the crossbar, much to the annoyance of the home fans.
36'
It's all Arsenal at the moment as they continue to keep Sunderland camped deep inside their own half of the pitch, but no matter how hard they try the Gunners just can't seem to find the back of the net.
34'
Bellerin tries to break down the right wing before sending yet another dangerous cross into the Sunderland penalty area, but Defoe does well to out-muscle the right-back before Van Aanholt deals with the danger with a thumping clearnace.
32'
And now Giroud almost opens the scoring! Again, Wilshere chips a delightful ball over the top of the Sunderland defence and, this time, into the feet of the striker, who beats Pantilimon with a great half-volley that ends up flying just past the far post.
30'
So close from Ozil! Wilshere holds up the ball 30 yards out before chipping a lovely pass over the head of Wickham and into the path of the German, but his close-range volley is overhit and flies over the top of the goal.
29'
Sunderland are finally able to break out of their own half of the pitch, with Graham latching onto a lofted pass forward before battling well with Koscielny and earning his side a throw-in near the corner flag on the right flank. It amounts to nothing, however, and Arsenal quickly regain possession once again.
27'
Again, Arsenal pass their way around the sea of blue shirts camped in front of them, but this time Gibbs ends up firing a 20-yard strike that flies comfortably over the top of the crossbar and out for a goal kick.
26'
Arsenal patiently pass the ball around the edge of the Sunderland box before Ozil tries to clip a cross towards the back post, but it takes a heavy deflection off Coates before being chested into the feet of Pantilimon by Van Aanholt.
24'
Arsenal keep hold of the ball and work it over to Cazorla, who then unleashes a fierce low shot from 30 yards out that flies through the middle of the Sunderland defence before being stopped by Pantilimon.
23'
Another wonderful opportunity for Arsenal! Ozil picks up the ball on the left-hand side of the penalty area and sends a great cross to Sanchez, who immediately unleashes a bouncing cross-cum-shot from the back post that almost meets Giroud in front of goal but is cut out by Coates at the vital moment.
22'
A poor pass by Sanchez gifts the ball to Van Aanholt, who attempts to dart into the Arsenal half of the pitch but has his run stopped by the Chilean and Bellerin near the halfway line.
20'
Great chance for Wilshere! Arsenal break away on a blisteringly quick counter attack, with Ozil finding himself in acres of space down the right flank. He curls a bouncing cross to Ramsey, who then tees up the Gunners' number 10, but his first-time shot from the edge of the penalty area is completely mishit and ends up flying well over the top of the crossbar.
18'

Aaron Ramsey

Larsson sprints down the left flank before being clattered into by Ramsey, who receives the first yellow card of the game as a result.

16'
And now Defoe goes close! The ball bounces around midway inside the Arsenal half of the pitch before Wickham nods the ball through the middle of Mertesacker and Koscielny and into the path of Defoe, but there's slightly too much power on the header and Ospina is just about able to cut out the danger at the vital moment.
15'
Excellent play by Arsenal! Sanchez sends an absolutely wonderful through-ball into the path of Wilshere, who is completely unmarked on the right-hand side of the penalty area, but Pantilimon is there to dispossess the midfielder with a wonderful sliding tackle.
14'
Arsenal take the second corner short before Ozil whips a cross into the box, but this time it's comfortably dealt with by Cattermole at the near post.
13'
Gibbs does well to get forward down the left wing before earning his side a corner. It's whipped into the penalty area where it meets Coates, who clears the ball out of play with a strong header.
11'
Wilshere and Giroud play a series of quick passes between one another before the Frenchman tees up Sanchez just outside of the Sunderland penalty area, but the Chilean's first touch is poor and he's unable to get a shot away before being dispossessed by O'Shea.
9'
Great chance for Arsenal! Bellerin sprints past Defoe with ease before sending an excellent cross into the heart of the penalty area that flies just a yard or two past the dipped head of Giroud.
7'
Larsson curls the resulting set-piece high and wide of its intended target, with the power of the attempted cross sending it out of play on the opposite flank.
6'
Wickham spins past both Koscielny and Gibbs deep down the right wing before teeing up Jones, who is immediately tripped over by Ramsey, resulting in a free kick for Sunderland in a dangerous position.
4'
Arsenal embark on a patient attacking move, with Wilshere linking up well with Cazorla on the right flank. The Spaniard then sends in an absolutely excellent low cross that almost finds Giroud in front of goal but it's just about cut out by Coates inside the six-yard box.
2'
Jones picks up the ball midway inside the Sunderland half of the pitch and immediately sends a brilliant lofted pass over the top of the Arsenal defence and into the path of Graham, who makes a great run forward, but Ospina does well to rush out and clear the danger before the striker can get a shot away on the edge of the penalty area.
1'
And we're off! Sunderland get us underway, attacking from right to left.
The two sides are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
Meanwhile, Sunderland boss Dick Advocaat has made just one alteration to the side that drew 0-0 at home to Leicester City, with Adam Johnson coming into the squad to replace the injured Liam Bridcutt.
Arsene Wenger has decided to make two changes to the Arsenal side that started last weekend’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United, with Nacho Monreal and Francis Coquelin making way for Kieran Gibbs and Jack Wilshere, the latter of whom is set to make his first league start for the Gunners since last November.
Sunderland substitutes: Mannone, Vergini, Reveillere, Rodwell, Giaccherini, Buckley, Fletcher.
Sunderland XI (4-2-3-1): Pantilimon; Jones, Coates, O’Shea, Van Aanholt; Larsson, Cattermole; Johnson, Defoe,Wickham; Graham.
Arsenal substitutes: Szczesny, Gabriel, Monreal, Flamini, Coquelin, Rosicky, Walcott.
Arsenal XI (4-2-3-1): Ospina; Bellerin, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Gibbs; Ramsey, Cazorla; Wilshere, Ozil, Sanchez; Giroud.
There’s just over 15 minutes left to go until until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this evening…
As for Sunderland, they are still in danger of dropping into the relegation zone and head to North London knowing that just one point is all that is needed for them to pull off a second consecutive great escape. They have looked incredibly impressive in recent weeks as well, with Dick Advocaat leading the determined Black Cats on a four-game unbeaten run, with just one of their last six league games ending in defeat. As a result, three points separate themselves and 18th-place Hull City, whilst fierce rivals Newcastle United, who sit precariously close to the bottom three in 17th, are just one point behind with one game remaining.
With just two games of the season left to play, both sides are battling hard as they aim to win two very different prizes. For Arsenal, their hopes of finishing in second place remain but are diminishing by the day, but a victory here this evening will move them just two points behind Manchester City ahead of the final game of the campaign. A disappointing defeat against Swansea City and an arguably lucky draw away to Manchester United dented their chances to pipping the reigning champions to second spot, but they will be able to finish as runners-up for the first time in a decade if they win their last two clashes and Southampton see off City at the Etihad on Sunday.
Good evening and welcome to our live text commentary of today’s Premier League clash between Arsenal and Sunderland. My name is Ben Cullimore and I will be keeping you up to date with all of the action from the Emirates.
